NORTHWEST DALLAS. Habla español? If you don't already, hopefully you can by the end of 2009! This Latino discoteca is a relative newcomer to Dallas's nightlife scene. Spanish beats play as experienced and amateur dancers show off their salsa and merengue dance moves. Providing refreshment at the bar are plenty of mixed drinks and beer. Patrons between the ages of 18 and 21 must pay a minimum cover charge of $5. Located off I-35 near Irving Texas Stadium.

GREENVILLE AVENUE. Cheap beer, casual atmosphere, and live bands give this bar a quintessential collegiate feel. And with a location just across the freeway from Southern Methodist University, a college crowd is what it attracts. Sometimes on weekends, you'll find 20-somethings hanging out, too. The bar books an eclectic array of bands, so you never know what type of music you might hear. If you stick to drinking beer and hanging out with your buddies, it could be a night of either making or reliving college memories par excellence.

DEEP ELLUM. Part of Deep Ellum's Clearview Complex, Art Bar is the popular music club's more bohemian off-shoot ­ the other, Blind Lemon, has all the flair and flavor of a John Hughes film. Local art displayed on the walls makes it quite clear how the place earned its name (if you find a piece you like, be sure to inquire since most are for sale). As to entertainment, poetry slams are held every Friday night, and walk-ups are more than welcome to give it a go. On other nights, various guest DJs spin a wide mix of house, techno and urban beats.

LAKEWOOD. Live jazz and a romantic, intimate ambience set the stage for an evening at Balcony, located in the historic Lakewood Theatre. A mixed clientele, from young professionals to students, sip martinis and listen as throaty jazz singers croon their favorite melodies. A small outdoor patio, comfortable booths and an assortment of stools and tables provide seating, and there's room enough for standing and mingling. The full bar also provides a nice selection of single malt scotches.

FAIR PARK. What could be better than knocking out a few loads of laundry while tossing back a cold beer or two? Bar of Soap offers large washer and dryer units, a full bar, and alternative bands like "Lucy Loves Schroeder" and "Dead Sexy." There's also a pool table if you're in the mood for a friendly game. The place draws an interesting crowd of artists, writers, and musicians. And why not? Household chores made palatable is a strong draw.
